Berlin’s ice cream scene is as eclectic and exciting as the city itself. You can find everything from classic Italian gelato to classic American-style ice cream, frozen custards, and international flavors from around the world. Whether you’re craving a creamy scoop of traditional vanilla, a refreshing fruit sorbet, or a plant-based treat made with oat or almond milk, Berlin has something to satisfy your sweet tooth.

With dessert artisans using high-quality ingredients and bold flavors at every corner, there are tons of great ice cream shops to include in a Berlin food tour.

What Makes Ice Cream in Berlin Special?

The ice cream culture of Berlin is a melting pot of global influences, with everything from Italian gelato to Scandinavian minimalist ice creams and even Japanese-inspired flavors. Many of Berlin’s ice cream parlors focus on organic ingredients, small-batch production, and unexpected flavor combinations.

This includes vegan and dairy-free options made with things like cashews, oats, and coconut-based alternatives. So, there are plenty of great ice cream options if you or someone in your group has special dietary preferences.

Top Ice Cream Parlors in Berlin

The following represents just a taste of some of the top ice cream parlors in Berlin.

Rosa Canina

This ice cream shop is a local favorite, known for using all-natural ingredients without artificial additives. Many of their flavors use organic ingredients with a few offerings available for people with special dietary needs. It’s best to visit during off-peak times if you want to avoid lines.

Some of their top signature ice creams include unique flavors like tonka bean, and Persian rose. However, my favorite is their salted caramel. It has a creaminess and depth of flavor that takes caramel to new levels that are only enhanced by the natural sweetness of the dairy.

Vanille & Marille

This is a small franchise of ice cream shops with several locations across Berlin. They are an artisanal ice cream shop focusing on rich, homemade flavors, with both gelato and classic ice cream offerings. They can get pretty busy at peak times, but lines tend to move fast.

Some of their signature ice cream flavors include apricot-lavender, dark chocolate sorbet, or their seasonal specialties featuring fresh fruits. I think they do an amazing job of balancing the flavor and pungency of their lavender flavors, which is a true sign of a master ice cream maker.

Jones Ice Cream

Despite the name, Jones Ice Cream shop was actually founded by a French pastry chef. They are known for ice cream with silky textures and an assortment of creative gourmet flavors. Many of which pair perfectly with their fresh-baked cookies. Don’t miss the honey-rosemary or peanut butter pretzel flavors.

Jones Ice Cream has multiple locations in Berlin and the outskirts. They tend to be most busy around lunch and early evening.

This Italian-style gelateria cafe is in Berlin’s Mitte district. It’s run by true gelato artisans, who painstakingly craft ultra-smooth, gelato flavors just like you’d find on the streets of Rome. However, they’re typically only open on weekends.

I think their pistachio gelato is a must-try, as it captures the true essence of the nut. Other popular gelato flavors to try include their rich dark chocolate and fruity mango sorbet.

This is one of Berlin’s most popular ice cream spots, with multiple stores throughout the city. The lines move fast but can get long during peak times. Especially on weekends.

Hokey Pokey is known for its luxurious, extra-creamy textures. One of their most popular signature flavors is white chocolate with salted caramel chunks. However, I think their passion fruit sorbet is the secret gem on their menu.

Fraulein Frost

This is a chain of charming ice cream parlors in Berlin that’s become popular thanks to their innovative flavors and a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. They do their best to source from local farms, which makes them very popular with locals and tourists alike. Lines can be especially long on the weekends.

Their baked apple-cinnamon ice cream is second to none when it’s available in season. They also have an elderflower sorbet that is especially aromatic and captures the essence of Germany’s cultural connection to elderberries.

Unique Ice Cream Flavors You Must Try in Berlin

Berlin’s ice cream scene is packed with bold and unexpected flavors that go beyond the usual vanilla and chocolate.

Honey-rosemary at Jones Ice Cream or peanut butter pretzel will challenge your notions of what ice cream can be in the best possible way.

At the same time, the rich black sesame and matcha gelato at Cuore di Vetro introduces you to what gelato and ice cream can be.

White chocolate with salted caramel chunks at one of Hokey Pokey’s shops gives you a taste of the familiar with creative flair.

Whether it’s tahini, elderflower, or even craft beer-infused scoops, Berlin’s ice cream shops redefine frozen treats with creativity and flair.
